Melvin “Skip” Alston, a native of Durham, North Carolina, has dedicated his life to serving others through public service, business leadership, and civil rights advocacy. After graduating from Durham’s public schools and studying Business Administration at North Carolina Central University, Chairman Alston moved to Greensboro in 1979. He launched a distinguished career in real estate, founding The Alston Realty Group, Inc., which now manages over $40 million in local properties. His other ventures include economic development and investment in community revitalization.
Chairman Alston has proudly represented the residents of District 8 on the Guilford County Board of Commissioners since 1992. His historic election as the Board’s first African American Chairman in 2002 underscored his commitment to equity and inclusion. Over the years, he has worked tirelessly to address the needs of his constituents, focusing on economic development, affordable housing, and improved access to healthcare. Chairman Alston’s leadership has guided critical initiatives, including investments in infrastructure and programs that enhance the quality of life for District 8 and all Guilford County residents.
In addition to his work in government, Chairman Alston co-founded the International Civil Rights Center & Museum in downtown Greensboro. This iconic institution preserves the legacy of the Greensboro sit-ins and continues to inspire the fight for justice. Chairman Alston also has a long history with the NAACP, serving as President of both the Greensboro branch and the North Carolina NAACP, as well as a member of its national board. His passion for civil rights and social justice remains central to his work in public service.
For Chairman Alston, family and faith are his most cherished accomplishments. Supported by his wife Gwendolyn Alston and two sons, he is a proud grandparent to two granddaughters. A devoted member of St. James Baptist Church, Chairman Alston is guided by his commitment to uplift and advocate for the communities he serves, especially those in District 8, ensuring a brighter future for all of Guilford County.
