Guilford County is governed by a nine-member Board of Commissioners; elected by district and at-large to serve four-year terms. Commissioners’ terms are staggered and general elections are held in November of even-numbered years. In December of each year, the Board elects a Chairman and Vice Chairman to serve for the upcoming year.
The Commissioners are responsible for adopting the annual budget and establishment of the property tax rate. They adopt ordinances, or local laws, that govern issues such as development, noise, and animal control. Commissioners are also responsible for appointing volunteers to serve on various advisory boards and commissions.
The Board of Commissioners meet the first and third Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. in the Commissioners’ Meeting Room located on the second floor of the Old County Courthouse, 301 W. Market St., Greensboro. Meeting days and locations may be adjusted due to holidays or additional meetings/work sessions may be added, so please check the annual meeting schedule for updates. If you know a Centenarian in our community, we invite you to submit their name for recognition. Help us celebrate their legacy, wisdom, and contributions with a special award in their honor.
How to Apply:
Submitting a Centenarian for recognition is simple. Let’s honor those who have shaped our community for generations!
Reach out to your county commissioner or email the Clerk to the Board to request a Centenarian award.
Please include the name of recipient and their birthdate in your request. Your request must be received at least 45 days in advance of the honoree’s birthday.
We will respond to you as soon as possible to acknowledge receipt of your request. If you have questions or do not hear from us within five business days, please contact please contact Ariane Webb at Awebb@guilfordcountync.gov or rkeller@guilfordcountync.gov.

Minutes dating back to 2015 are available on the county website. If you need minutes from a meeting prior to 2015 or need assistance in locating a specific Board of Commissioners action, contact the Clerk’s Office by calling 336-641-4893.
The Clerk’s Office is the custodian of the official records for the Board of Commissioners and houses the minute books dating back to 1868. If you wish to view the minute books, please contact the Clerk’s Office to make an appointment. To ensure preservation, the books are not permitted to be taken out of the Clerk’s Office.
The meetings are televised live on Channel 13 in the City of Greensboro and other areas of the county and on Channel 8 in the City of High Point. The meetings are replayed on Greensboro’s Channel 13 on Fridays after the meeting at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 1 p.m. At this time the meetings are not replayed on Channel 8.
Citizens can also view the meetings live via web streaming through the county website. Archives of videos from previous meetings dating back to 2006 are also available.
At the beginning of each regular meeting, the Board of Commissioners allows for speakers from the floor. During that portion of the agenda, each speaker is permitted to address the Board of Commissioners for a maximum of three minutes. Each speaker from the floor session is limited to 30 minutes unless extended by the Chairman. If you are interested in speaking from the floor, we suggest you arrive 15 minutes prior to the start of the meeting and sign in with the security officer at the meeting room entrance. Speakers will be given a number designating their place in line for speakers from the floor.
Upcoming meeting agendas are posted online. The agenda is posted on the Friday in the week prior to the Board of Commissioners meeting. Hard copies of the agenda are also available at the Board meeting.

The Clerk to the Board of County Commissioners prepares agendas for Board of Commissioners meetings and notifies Commissioners, appropriate county staff, news media, and other interested parties of dates and times of Board of Commissioners meetings to ensure compliance with state Open Meetings Law. The Clerk attends Board meetings, committee meetings, and work sessions, and composes a full and accurate account of all actions taken. The Clerk indexes and prepares minutes as the historical account for public inspection. The Clerk to the Board's office is also responsible for advertising for public hearings and other actions as required by state law.
The Clerk to the Board is officially responsible for the county seal and certifies legal documents on behalf of the county. The Clerk to the Board's office also manages the records for all volunteer boards and commissions appointments and administers and files the oath of office for members appointed to various advisory boards. In Guilford County, the Clerk to the Board is also responsible for issuing fireworks permits on behalf of the County Manager.
