What is Food Security?

Food Security is consistent access to safe, nutritious, and culturally relevant food to live a healthy and active life. In Guilford County, 13.7% of our community faces hunger or are worried they won't have enough to eat. The Guilford County Food Security Program is committed to uniting and fortifying food security initiatives in our communities, fostering a diverse, equitable food system that promotes the well-being, economic vitality, and environmental resilience of all community members. This work spans across city lines and is only possible through collaboration and strong partnerships with over 50 local nonprofits, faith-based organizations, schools, healthcare providers, farmers and businesses. Together we work to meet the immediate food needs, while also building a sustainable and resilient food system—one that empowers individuals, supports local food production, and ensures consistent access to nutritious, culturally relevant food for all.

Three Main Goals

  1. Improve opportunities for collaboration and connection between existing community organizations and stakeholders committed to improving food security in Guilford County.
  2. Create a system for measuring and sharing data amongst organizations working to improve food security across Guilford County.
  3. Develop a county-wide food security plan for Guilford County.
