Guilford County Celebrates National County Government Month

Guilford County will celebrate National County Government Month (NCGM) during the month of April to showcase how the county helps empower Successful People to thrive in a Strong Community supported by a Quality Government.

Guilford County will celebrate National County Government Month (NCGM) during the month of April to showcase how the county helps empower Successful People to thrive in a Strong Community supported by a Quality Government.

Various departments provide core services to support Successful People including the Family Justice Center, Public Health, Social Services, and Veterans Services.

  • In 2024, the Guilford County Family Justice Center assisted more than 13,000 victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, child abuse, and elder abuse.
  • In April 2024, Guilford County Division of Public Health Women (DPH), Infants, and Children (WIC) Program launched its mobile unit, assisting more than 200 clients since its launch. In 2024, the county’s WIC Program assisted more than 13,000 clients throughout its Greensboro and High Point locations.
  • Through Every Baby Guilford, 62 patients were served by the county’s community-based doula program and more than 230 uninsured residents received prenatal care through the county’s Adopt-A-Mom Program.
  • In 2024, the Guilford County Division of Social Services processed more than 133,000 benefits applications and more than 154,000 recertifications. In December 2023, Social Services established a new Division of Heath Benefits to address Medicaid Expansion. As of March 2025, more than 38,900 county residents have been enrolled into Medicaid as part of the expansion.
  • In 2024, Guilford County Veterans Services assisted more than 5,300 veterans and clients.

Guilford County’s Strong Community is supported by lifesaving or enhancing services like Animal Services, Emergency Services, Sheriff’s Office, Cooperative Extension, and Parks.

  • In 2024, Guilford County Animal Services processed more than 6,600 pet adoptions and administered more than 1,000 rabies vaccines. Animal Control responded to more than 14,300 calls for service.
  • In 2024, Guilford County Emergency Medical Services responded to more than 81,400 calls.
  • In 2024, the Guilford County Adult Resource Team, a collaboration between Social Services’ Division of Adult Protective Services and EMS assisted more than 160 residents by providing a stronger service line for patients who need resources and care that exceed normal EMS capabilities.
  • The Guilford County Sheriff’s Office responded to more than 59,700 dispatched and self-initiated calls for service.
  • In 2024, NC Cooperative Extension - Guilford County Center offered more than 400 educational training courses and workshops of which nearly 11,500 residents attended.
  • The county’s park system encompasses seven regional parks, 10 passive parks, over 30 miles of trails and greenways, and more than 4,500 acres of open space. Parks facilities collectively attract more than 700,000 visitors annually.

Our county teams ensure our community enjoys Quality Government services and accountable stewardship of the public’s assets.   

  • The County Manager’s Office and Budget Department manages a balanced budget of $833.7 million for fiscal year 2024-2025.
  • The Guilford County Board of Elections processed more than 44,700 new voter registrations in 2024 and supports more than over 391,000 registered voters annually.
  • In March 2025, Guilford County Communications Department launched a new redesigned Guilford County website focused on accessibility and a resident-focused experience and design.

Since 1991, the National Association of Counties (NACo) has encouraged counties across the country to raise public awareness about county roles and responsibilities during National County Government Month in the month of April.

"Here in Guilford County, we're dedicated to continually improving the programs and services that benefit our community," said Board of Commissioners Chair Melvin “Skip” Alston. "National County Government Month is a perfect opportunity for residents to get to know more about the essential services we provide, from public safety to health and human services. We strongly encourage everyone to attend our budget town halls and community resource fairs on April 1 and April 7 to see firsthand how Guilford County is working for you."

Throughout April, Guilford County departments will recognize National County Government Month through various engaging activities. The Board of Commissioners will host budget town halls and community resource fairs on Tuesday, April 1, and Monday, April 7. Residents will have the opportunity to explore Guilford County’s available services and programs during the community resource fairs. During the budget town halls, residents will have the opportunity to review the annual budget process and share their input on budget priorities.

Cooperative Extension is hosting an art exhibit, “Framing the Future: A Photovoice Exploration of Food Justice,”[EC1]  on Friday, April 4, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Nussbaum Center For Entrepreneurship. Every Baby Guilford will host a Black Maternal Health Week: Family Day on Saturday, April 12, at Center City Park from 12 to 4 p.m. The Family Justice Center will observe Denim Day on Wednesday, April 30, to raise awareness about sexual violence and support survivors.
