Make a difference for the animals in our community by joining our volunteer team!

Volunteers are a vital part of Guilford County Animal Services and assist the shelter in many different ways. Our opportunities to volunteer are as varied as our volunteers themselves. You must be 18 years or older to serve. Exceptions can be made but you must receive prior approval from the Volunteer Coordinator. Please see the list below for some ways you can help the animals of Guilford County.  

Current Volunteer Programs

  • Administrative – Assists the Volunteer Coordinator with administrative services
  • Dog Enrichment - Walking/grooming/enrichment
  • Dogs Day Out - Takes a shelter dog out for walks and socialization
  • Events - Assists staff on and off site with various events
  • Early Morning Kennel Cleaning - Assists staff with morning cleaning
  • Canine Comfort Crew - Helps with nursing home visits with shelter pup
  • Cat Enrichment - socializing/grooming/enrichment
  • Lobby Greeter – Assists customers to adoption rooms and fields questions
  • Pet of the Week – Assists staff with local media appearances

You must be 18 years or older to volunteer with Guilford County Animal Services. 

We do not allow court-ordered or disciplinary volunteer services at Guilford County Animal Services.

In order to stay in active status in our system, you must serve 24 hours of service within a one-year period.

Our program is flexible in that we can find something for almost everyone here at the shelter. If you'd like to just come help with administrative tasks and never handle animals, that is fine too! 

Yes! We have many community events and outreach programs in which volunteers play an integral role. 

Yes! We have had many work groups volunteer at the shelter or run donation drives in the past. Please contact Lisa Lee at llee@guilfordcountync.gov for more information on how your group can help.
