The Regional Vasectomy Program (RVP), based at the Guilford County Division of Public Health, helps provide men with vasectomy services. This program, sponsored by the North Carolina Division of Health and Human Services, is open to any male who is 21 years of age or older.
Fees are based on family size and income.
Vasectomy is a permanent birth control method for men who do not want to father any more children and is one of the most effective means of birth control. It is a safe and simple surgical procedure.
Vasectomy is usually performed in an urologist’s office under a local anesthetic. The Regional Vasectomy Program contracts with board-certified urologists statewide. After surgery, there may be some bruising, swelling and discomfort. You will need to take a break from sex, exercise, and heavy lifting for one (1) week after your vasectomy.
No, not right away. To make sure the surgery was successful, several samples of semen must be taken back to the urology practice where the surgery was performed to test for the presence of any sperm. Most physicians require two (2) negative (no sperm seen) samples in a row before you are told you may stop using temporary birth control.
While this surgery should make you unable to father children, it will not protect you from Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). Always wear condoms unless you are in a committed relationship.
A reversal (vasovasostomy) can be performed, but the surgery is expensive, must be done in a hospital and may not be successful.
