Board of Adjustment
The Guilford County Board of Adjustment is a five-member quasi-judicial body composed of county residents appointed by the Board of County Commissioners. The Board of Adjustment oversees and makes decisions around zoning in the county .
Meetings
The Board of Adjustment normally meets the first Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. in the Carolyn Q. Coleman Conference Room, Old County Courthouse, 301 W. Market St., Greensboro, NC 27402 (first floor). Please refer to the Meeting Schedule for specific dates and application submittal deadlines.

Board of Adjustment Powers
The Board of Adjustment shall have the following powers and duties (See Sub sec. 3 - Development Review Procedures of the Unified Development Ordinance for details of processes listed below):
- To decide development procedures, namely:
- Variances
- To hear and decide appeals from and review any administrative order, requirement, decision, determination, or interpretation made by an administrative official charged with enforcing this Ordinance, namely:
- Interpretation of zoning provisions of this Ordinance;
- Floodplain boundary, zoning boundary, or other delineated boundaries;
- Address assignments; and
- Decisions of the Historic Preservation Commission (Major Certificate of Appropriateness), limited to certiorari.
- To hear and decide any exceptions which are specifically delegated to it by this Ordinance;
- To determine and vary application of zoning regulations in harmony with their general purpose and intent and in accordance with general and specific rules contained therein;
- To hear and decide appeals for variances from the zoning provisions of this Ordinance in cases where special conditions would make strict and literal interpretation and enforcement of the zoning provisions of this Ordinance result in a loss of privileges shared by other properties within the same zoning district;
- To interpret zoning maps and pass upon disputed questions of district boundary lines and similar questions that may occur in the administration of this Ordinance;
- To hear and decide all matters referred to it or upon which it is required to pass under this Ordinance;
- To determine upon application of an owner or upon referral from the Planning and Development Director whether a proposed nonconforming use is equal or less intensive than an existing, legal nonconforming use, in accordance with Sub sec. 11 – Nonconformities; and
- To hear and decide upon appeals concerning violations of the Guilford County Solid Waste Ordinance.
