Resident Boards and Commissions

Members of county boards and commissions are relied upon to provide valuable insight into the needs of our community. The Board of Commissioners believe that these boards and commissions are best served when there is a broad representation of residents reflecting diversity in race, ethnicity, age, gender, and district.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tab/Accordion Items

Boards and commissions are advisory or regulatory groups that work with the county Board of Commissioners to study and interpret the needs of local residents, and develop community support, when required. Regulatory groups have authority, such as, the power to make rulings and impose penalties in accordance with various sections of the ordinance code. Advisory groups provide guidance and policy recommendations to the program or agency with which they are affiliated.

In addition to standing boards and commissions, the Board of Commissioners may appoint temporary committees to address specific issues that have been identified as time-sensitive and of immediate concern to the commissioners and residents.

Serving on a board or commission provides you with a significant and meaningful opportunity to participate in local government.

Any resident of Guilford County is eligible to serve on appointed boards, commissions, committees or authorities (unless the appointment is otherwise prohibited by state statute). Certain boards and commission positions require a specific set of skills and/or training, as specified by local and/or state regulations. In these cases, the Board of Commissioners must appoint persons who meet these guidelines.

All appointments are made according to the statute, ordinance or resolution that created the board or commission. Unless otherwise stated within regulatory guidelines, terms of office are determined by the Board of Commissioners. Residents normally serve no more than two consecutive full terms, unless regulatory guidelines require an extended appointment, or the requirement is waived by the Board of Commissioners due to extenuating circumstances. Reappointment is not guaranteed and subject to local or state statute, and/or Board of Commissioners’ policy.
