Guilford County participates in Operation Green Light to recognize and honor vibrant veteran community

Post Date:10/18/2024 4:30 PM

In advance of the Veterans Day holiday, Guilford County continues to shine a light on a nationwide campaign supporting and showing appreciation for military veterans, by illuminating buildings and other structures in a vibrant green light, Monday, Nov. 4 through Monday, Nov. 11, 2024. Operation Green Light also seeks to shed light on the unique challenges faced by veterans and their families, while highlighting the resources available to them at the local, state, and federal levels.

The Board of Commissioners passed a resolution last night during their October 17 regular-scheduled meeting to help support the national effort and encourage residents to participate by illuminating their buildings and homes with green lights. These gestures are meant to convey a heartfelt message to veterans that they are recognized, valued, and supported.

"Operation Green Light is a powerful symbol of hope and support for our veterans as they transition from military to civilian life. As the son of a retired senior military officer, I understand the deep sacrifices made by veterans and their families, whose resilience and courage protect our freedoms,” said District 7 County Commissioner Frankie T. Jones, Jr. “In Guilford County, we proudly recognize this initiative, illuminating our commitment to ensuring veterans have access to the healthcare, employment, and resources they deserve. The green lights displayed throughout the county serve as both a thank you and a promise to support their journey forward."

During the Operation Green Light weeklong commemoration, both Guilford County courthouses and other county buildings will be adorned with green lighting to symbolize their commitment to this cause.

"Operation Green Light has been and continues to be a powerful visual representation of support for our men and women who have proudly served our nation,” said Guilford County Veterans Services Director Robert Shelly. “We encourage Guilford County residents and friends to join us in illuminating a green light in support of our veterans, while also contemplating the ways in which, as a nation and at the county level, we aid our military personnel as they transition back to civilian life after their military career ends.”

Residents are encouraged to share their participation on social media using the hashtags #GuilfordGlowsGreen and #OperationGreenLight.

Programs like the Guilford County Veterans Service Office offer a wide variety of resources for veterans and their families, as part of a nationwide network of programs at the county, state, and federal level dedicated to assisting veterans and their families.
