About
The construction project of the Governmental Plaza, located between the Old Guilford County Courthouse, Guilford County Courthouse, and the City of Greensboro’s Melvin Municipal Office Building includes repair of structural elements in the plaza parking deck, excavation of the plaza level to allow installation of a new waterproofing system, and a new landscape plan to renovate the plaza level.
The Governmental Plaza Construction Project contract was approved by the Board of County Commissioners on December 7, 2023. The Board approved a contract of approximately $8.3 million to Stone Restoration of America to repair the Government Plaza and plaza parking deck. The project is expected to be completed by Fall of 2025. Once completed, the new landscape will make the Government Plaza more accessible to county residents, visitors, and staff.
In Spring of 2024, construction crews began initial work on the plaza project. The Government Plaza will be closed to the public through the completion of the project. The closure includes the Millennium Gate entrance, the Phill G. McDonald Plaza, and the David E. Hickman Plaza, and the stage area with the blue roofing.
Entrance to Government Buildings
As of October 2024, the plaza-side entrance of the Old Guilford County Courthouse has reopened. The front doors at 301 West Market Street will remain locked, as they were before the construction project.
As of September 2024, construction fencing has been shifted to allow construction crews to complete the needed work and at no time during county business hours will any current access be blocked. The contractors will, however, temporarily block some areas for public access during evening and weekend hours when county business is closed.
Residents are encouraged to plan ahead and make sure to follow the wayfinding signs posted throughout the perimeter to find an entrance to the Old Guilford County Courthouse (County Government Building), the Guilford County Courthouse, or the Melvin Municipal Office Building (Greensboro City Hall).
Residents can access the ADA ramp on the right side of the Old Guilford County Courthouse. Throughout construction, access to the Truist parking lot will remain open.
Residents visiting the Guilford County Courthouse who need to use an ADA entrance will be able to use the entrance on 201 South Eugene Street. For questions and concerns about the Guilford County Courthouse entrance, contact Taylor E. Chavis-Banks at taylor.e.chavis.banks@nccourts.org.
