County Emergency Management Planning

Guilford County Emergency Management is responsible for key emergency plans for the County that  cover roles and responsibilities for partner agencies and for the municipalities and townships located within Guilford County.

These plans include the:

• Guilford County Emergency Operations Plan
• Guilford County Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan
• Guilford County Recovery Plan
• Guilford County Joint Information System Plan
• Guilford County Communications and Warning Plan
• Other ancillary plans and procedures

Guilford County Emergency Management utilizes its plan development process to develop the scope of the needed plan, research applicable laws and best practices, and then incorporate stakeholder input into the review process.

Public Education

Guilford County Emergency Management provides Emergency and Disaster Preparedness presentations to civic and community groups as well as other public service agencies within Guilford County. There is no charge for these presentations and they can be tailored to your specific needs and times.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

Following a disaster, community members may be on their own for a period of time because of the size of the area affected, lost communications, and impassable roads.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program supports local response capability by training volunteers to organize themselves and spontaneous volunteers at the disaster site, to provide immediate assistance to victims, and to collect disaster intelligence to support responders’ efforts when they arrive.

In the classroom, participants learn about the hazards they face and ways to prepare for them. CERT members are taught basic organizational skills that they can use to help themselves, their loved ones, and their neighbors until help arrives.

Guilford County Emergency Managements sponsors CERT training in the community. Training consists of 24 hours of instruction on topics that include disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster psychology. Upon completion of the training, participants are encouraged to continue their involvement by participating in training activities and volunteering for projects that support their community’s disaster preparedness efforts.

Community Preparedness

Disasters disrupt hundreds of thousands of lives every year. Each disaster has lasting effects, both to people and property. If a disaster occurs in your community, local government and disaster-relief organizations will try to help you, but you need to be ready as well. Local responders may not be able to reach you immediately, or they may need to focus their efforts elsewhere. You should know how to respond to severe weather or any disaster that could occur in your area – hurricanes, earthquakes, extreme cold, flooding, or terrorism. You should also be ready to be self-sufficient for at least three days. This may mean providing for your own shelter, first aid, food, water, and sanitation.
