An evidence-based intervention for pregnant people and new parents to help manage stress and prevent postpartum depression.

What is mothers and babies?

Mothers and Babies is a perinatal depression prevention program that offers brief, affordable intervention to families, communities and systems across the United States. It offers mental health services and supports that are easy to access, affordable, non-stigmatizing and effective.

Mothers and Babies

Mothers and Babies is designed for implementation with pregnant people and new parents, providing a toolkit of coping skills to help manage mood and stress within the context of parenting a baby. Mothers and Babies focuses on three specific areas: encouraging more engagement in pleasant activities, promoting healthier ways of thinking, and improving social support. This evidenced-based intervention is based on principles of cognitive-behavioral therapy, attachment theory, and psychoeducation.

Who Implements Mothers and Babies?

Mothers and Babies is designed to be delivered by clinics or community-based providers including but not limited to Home-Visiting programs from a variety of educational and professional backgrounds. It can be delivered as an individual or group intervention in various settings where pregnant people and new parents access services.

Backed By Research

Multiple research studies conducted over a decade or more have examined the effectiveness and implementation of Mothers and Babies with different populations, in different settings. This research shows the program to be effective in preventing the onset of major depressive episodes and reducing depressive symptoms among pregnant and parenting people. Participants understand the content and find the skills useful in their daily lives.
