Baby being feedGood nutrition is important to help your body recover after pregnancy and to support breastfeeding.  Good nutrition during infancy is important for the growth and development of your child.  Healthy eating habits are important to begin early in their life.  That’s why WIC provides healthy food packages designed to meet your specific nutritional needs after delivery and during infancy.

Each postpartum woman who is enrolled in the program will be assigned a food package. Based on that food package, you may receive benefits from WIC to purchase specific foods like:

  • $11 for fruits and vegetables (fresh, canned, or frozen)
  • 36 ounces of breakfast cereal which is low in sugar and high in iron
  • 3 gallons of nonfat or 1% milk – provides calcium, protein, and vitamins A and D
  • 32 ounces of nonfat or low-fat yogurt for even more calcium and probiotics
  • 16 ounces of cheese
  • 1 dozen eggs which are a great source of protein
  • 96 ounces of 100% juice (no sugar added) for Vitamin C
  • More foods that are great sources of protein:
    • 16-18 ounces of peanut butter OR
    • 16 ounces dry beans, peas, or lentils

Fully breastfeeding women are eligible to receive benefits from WIC up to one year after a baby is born. When you’re fully breastfeeding, you will receive the  LARGEST food package that WIC offers.

Each FULLY breastfeeding woman who is enrolled in the program may receive benefits from WIC to purchase specific foods like:

  • $11 for fruits and vegetables (fresh, canned, or frozen)
  • 16 ounces of whole grains
    • You can choose from: whole wheat bread, brown rice, whole wheat pasta, whole wheat tortillas, or corn tortillas.
  • 36 ounces of breakfast cereal which is low in sugar and high in iron
  • 5 gallons of nonfat or 1% milk – provides calcium, protein, and vitamins A and D
  • 32 ounces of nonfat or low-fat yogurt for even more calcium and probiotics
  • 32 ounces of cheese
  • 2 dozen eggs which are a great source of protein
  • 144 ounces of 100% juice (no sugar added) for Vitamin C
  • 30 ounces of canned fish
  • More foods that are great sources of protein:
    • 16-18 ounces of peanut butter OR
    • 16 ounces dry beans, peas, or lentils

Every month, you may receive the following for your newborn:

Your breast milk is made just for your baby, which means your baby will receive all of the nutrients they need to grow and be healthy.  WIC provides benefits for fully breastfed babies when they are ready for solid foods. Until then, your milk is enough! That is why women who are fully breastfeeding get the largest food package that WIC offers.

If your baby is drinking some formula, your WIC nutritionist will discuss the types and amounts of formula you can choose to feed your baby.

Take a look at the formulas WIC currently provides. If your baby is on a different formula, or requires a special formula, discuss your available options with your nutritionist.

Every month, you will receive the following for your baby:

  • The amount and types of baby food you will receive from your WIC benefits will depend on if you are breastfeeding or formula feeding your baby. 

A fully breastfeeding baby may receive.

  • At 6 months of age:
    • 256 ounces of infant fruits and vegetables
    • 24 ounces of infant cereal
    • 77.5 ounces of infant meats

A fully formula fed baby may receive.

  • At 6 months of age:
    • 128 ounces of infant fruits and vegetables
    • 24 ounces of infant cereal

You will also have the opportunity to meet with one of our nutritionists to learn about good nutrition for postpartum and breastfeeding women and infants. They will also discuss healthy eating habits, how to prepare healthy meals and snacks, and your personal nutrition goals.
