Whether you are a new parent or an expectant parent, finding the support you need to feel competent, confident, and well-connected is crucial for a healthy pregnancy. Guilford County has a number of healthcare services, local support groups, and financial assistance programs to help provide that support.

Perinatal Health Ambassadors (PHA) and Preconception Peer Educators (PPE) are community members educating their peers, colleagues, and social media audiences on reproductive health messaging for birthing people, non-birthing people, their support persons, providers, and whomever willing to listen. Ambassadors and Peer Educators connect with their communities to engage an audience that will help identify and implement wanted, needed, and sustainable changes affecting birth outcomes.

Health Ambassadors receive monthly toolkits with educational content and social media templates to share with their networks. These toolkits make it easy for partners and community members to promote health equity on their social media accounts and amplify wellness messaging in Guilford County.

Community Action for Healthy Babies is a space where individuals passionate about maternal and infant health converge to tackle racial disparities head-on. This inclusive space welcomes community partners from all backgrounds who are committed to working collaboratively towards one common goal: ensuring every mother and child receives equitable access to quality healthcare.

Our CAHB meetings feature insightful discussions, interactive workshops, and networking opportunities. Participants will delve into the root causes of racial health inequities and explore innovative strategies to address them effectively. From healthcare professionals and policymakers to community organizers and advocates, everyone has a crucial role to play in reshaping the landscape of maternal and child health.

Together, we will leverage our collective expertise, experiences, and resources to enact meaningful change and create a future where every baby, regardless of race or socioeconomic status, has the opportunity to thrive from the moment of conception. In 2020, Guilford County began the process of implementing a Fetal Infant Mortality Review (FIMR). A FIMR significantly improves a community’s performance of public health functions and enhances the existing perinatal care system’s goals, components, and communication mechanisms.

The focus of FIMR on systems of care and identifying gaps in care results in action being taken in a way that interpretation of vital statistics data alone does not necessarily promote.

FIMR provides an opportunity to:

• Monitor the effects of a changeable health care system
• Assist communities in understanding how changing conditions impact services and resources and affect families throughout the community trying to access or utilize services

As a community-driven process, FIMRs utilize a Review Team to review maternal medical records from infant deaths and make systems-level recommendations when necessary. An Action Team is made up of community policy leaders who listen to recommendations and make the necessary changes in a community.

Family Voice

In addition, FIMR includes an extensive family interview. The family or maternal interview provides significant information about health equity and disparities among diverse populations in the community, the problems families face and their knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about health. In addition, the information present reveals whether or not quality services and community resources are available, accessible, culturally appropriate and responsive to the community. It also offers insights into why services and resources may not be effective.
