The Guilford County Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) was established in April 1980 as the result of an initiative by the Bicentennial Celebration Committee as part of the County’s Historic Preservation Program. The HPC membership has 11 seats which are appointed by the Board of County Commissioners drawing from either County jurisdictions or the County at large.

The main purpose and goal of the HPC is to protect the integrity of historic resources in Guilford County. Much of this goal is accomplished through local Historic Landmark or Historic District designation, for which property owners may apply. Through designation of historic properties, the HPC is afforded the opportunity to review alterations to historic properties through the Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) application process. Additionally, the HPC members are historic preservation advocates and educators, providing technical advice on historic preservation practices and strategies to property owners.

Established in 1771, Guilford County features a rich architectural history that reflects English, German, Scottish, Native American and African-American settlements. With the arrival of the railroad in North Carolina in 1856, the County saw rapid growth and industrial innovation. Throughout the twentieth century, high growth and change was somewhat tempered with preservation efforts that resulted in the development of a comprehensive preservation network of historic landmarks and districts, non-profit advocacy groups, and house museums. Today, Guilford County features some of North Carolina’s best historic examples of popular national architectural styles. Together, the County and its citizens strive to build a bright future while also celebrating and protecting a rich cultural heritage.
